Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)

604-meter vertical drop into Lysefjord, no railings

Cliff height: 604 metersTrail: 8 km return, 4 hoursElevation gain: 500 metersAnnual hikers: 300,000+

Overview

Preikestolen — Pulpit Rock — is a flat-topped cliff formation overhanging Lysefjord. The plateau is approximately 25 by 25 meters, cracked from the mountain face by frost erosion during the last ice age. Geologists estimate it separated from the cliff wall around 10,000 years ago.

The hike starts at Preikestolen Fjellstue (mountain lodge), 25 km from Stavanger. Access requires a ferry crossing from Tau — the drive plus ferry takes about 45 minutes total. From the trailhead, the route is 4 km one way, gaining 500 meters of elevation over a mix of gravel paths, boardwalks, and rock slabs.

The trail is classified DNT Blue — steep in places, with some scrambling over wet rock. It is not technical, but it is not a casual stroll. In rain (frequent), the rock slabs become slippery. Proper hiking boots are not optional. The round trip takes 4 hours for fit hikers, longer with stops.

At the top, there are no railings, no barriers, and no safety infrastructure. You walk to the edge and look down 604 meters to the fjord water. Norwegian authorities have deliberately chosen not to install fencing — the philosophy is that nature carries inherent risk, and visitors are responsible for their own safety.

The trail receives over 300,000 hikers per year. In peak summer (July–August), the cliff top can have 50–100 people at once. The parking lot fills by 09:00. Start before 07:00 or after 16:00 to avoid the worst crowds.
