Activities & Tours in Norway

Unforgettable Arctic experiences — chase the northern lights, watch whales breach, mush huskies through snow, and explore glaciers and fjords.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardLuxuryFeatured

Northern Lights Dog Sledding

Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Dog sledding under the aurora at 78°N — the most extreme aurora experience on earth. A team of Alaskan huskies pulls you across the frozen Adventdalen valley while the sky shifts green and violet overhead. Peak season runs November through February, when the polar night guarantees total darkness and KP3+ activity is frequent.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardLuxuryFeatured

Polar Bear Safari by Snowmobile

Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Multi-hour snowmobile expedition into Svalbard's eastern wilderness, where the polar bear population outnumbers humans 3:1. Your licensed guide carries a rifle — mandatory outside Longyearbyen settlement limits. Routes vary by ice and weather conditions, covering 60–120 km across glacial valleys and frozen fjords.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardMid-RangeFeatured

Glacier Hiking Expedition

Svalbard, Norway

Svalbard has 60% glacier coverage. Guided day hikes on Longyearbreen and Nordenskiöldbreen with crampons and ice axes provided. You walk across blue ice, through meltwater channels, and past crevasse fields that have been forming since the last ice age. The guide reads the ice conditions live — no two trips follow the same route.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardLuxury

Snowmobile to Pyramiden Ghost Town

Pyramiden, Svalbard

A full-day snowmobile expedition across Tempelfjorden to the abandoned Soviet mining settlement of Pyramiden. The town was evacuated in 1998 and left frozen in time — Lenin's northernmost bust still faces the glacier. The 200 km round trip crosses open fjord ice and glacial moraines. Your guide carries a rifle for polar bear territory.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardLuxury

Sail & Hike the Svalbard Archipelago

Svalbard, Norway

A multi-day sailing expedition through the Svalbard archipelago with daily shore hikes on uninhabited islands. You sleep aboard a traditional sailing vessel, navigate between glaciers and bird cliffs, and hike terrain that has no trails — only coordinates. 57hours runs these with professional mountain guides and experienced skippers.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardLuxury

Arctic Wildlife Photography Tour

Svalbard, Norway

Dedicated photography expedition targeting Svalbard's Arctic wildlife: polar bears, Arctic foxes, walrus colonies, and seabird cliffs with thousands of breeding Brünnich's guillemots. Led by a professional wildlife photographer and an armed guide. You travel by zodiac boat along the coastline, with long stops at known wildlife sites. Bring a 200–500mm lens.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardMid-Range

Northern Lights Photography Chase

Svalbard, Norway

A specialist aurora photography tour at 78°N during Solar Maximum 25. Your guide monitors the KP index and cloud cover in real time, driving to the clearest skies within a 30 km radius of Longyearbyen. At KP3+ with clear sky, the aurora at this latitude fills the entire sky — not just the northern horizon. The guide helps with camera settings and long-exposure technique.

🐻‍❄️SvalbardMid-Range

Midnight Sun Fjord Kayaking

Adventfjorden, Svalbard

Paddle through Adventfjorden and Isfjorden under 24-hour daylight. The water is calm, the glaciers calve into the fjord ahead of you, and the only sound is your paddle. Suitable for beginners — the guide provides full instruction and dry suits. You may spot ringed seals, bearded seals, and beluga whales from water level.

Northern Lights Chase from Tromsø
🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Northern Lights Chase from Tromsø

Tromsø, Norway

A minibus convoy tracks clear skies up to 200 km from Tromsø, with the guide monitoring KP index and cloud forecasts in real time. You need KP3 or higher and a clear sky window. This tour chases both conditions simultaneously rather than waiting at a fixed viewpoint. Book three or more nights to give yourself a realistic chance of a clear sighting.

Whale Watching Safari Tromsø
🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Whale Watching Safari Tromsø

Tromsø, Norway

Orca and humpback whales follow the herring schools into the fjords around Tromsø each winter. Departures run from Tromsø harbour on purpose-built whale watching vessels, with guide commentary on feeding behavior and pod identification. November through January is the peak window. Sightings are not guaranteed on any single trip — book two departures if your schedule allows.

Arctic Kayaking with Midnight Sun
🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Arctic Kayaking with Midnight Sun

Tromsø, Norway

Sea kayaking on Tromsøysund under continuous daylight, with paddling routes taking you past the underside of the Tromsø Bridge and along the eastern shore of Tromsø island. The water temperature runs 10–14°C in summer, and dry suits are mandatory. Tromsø Outdoor keeps group sizes small enough that the guide can give individual attention to first-time paddlers.

🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Northern Lights at Haldde Observatory

Alta, Norway

Alta sits at the base of one of Norway's most productive aurora corridors. The Northern Lights Observatory runs guided evenings from Haldde mountain, 904 meters above sea level, where the KP index threshold for visible aurora drops below 3 due to altitude and minimal light pollution. Haldde is where Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland conducted the first systematic aurora research in 1899 and 1900.

🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Dog Sledding at Holmen Husky Lodge

Alta, Norway

Holmen Husky Lodge sits in the Finnmark wilderness outside Alta, running expeditions with a kennel of 300 Siberian huskies. The 5-hour session covers 30 km of trail through birch forest and open plateau, with participants driving their own sled after a 20-minute instruction. The lodge serves a warm meal at the midpoint. Outside temperature typically runs -10°C to -25°C in January and February.

🌌Northern NorwayLuxury

Snowmobile Safari across Altafjord

Alta, Norway

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel operates snowmobile routes across the frozen surface of Altafjord, covering 60–100 km of open fjord ice and forested riverbanks. Altafjord freezes reliably each winter and provides a natural flat corridor for the route. The safari departs from Sorrisniva, 20 km east of Alta, and follows the Altaelva river valley before heading onto the fjord ice.

Cod Fishing Excursion from Henningsvær

Lofoten, Norway

XXLofoten runs fishing trips from the working cod docks at Henningsvær, one of the oldest active fishing stations in Lofoten. You fish the same Vestfjord grounds that Norwegian fishermen have worked for 1,000 years during the skrei season. The boat carries a maximum of 10 passengers and the guide cleans and prepares your catch for you to take back to the rorbu kitchen.

🏔️Lofoten IslandsMid-Range

Arctic Surfing at Unstad Beach

Lofoten, Norway

Unstad is a 400-meter beach on the northwest coast of Vestvågøya that generates consistent Atlantic swells year-round. The water temperature runs 8–14°C in summer and 3–6°C in winter, requiring a 5mm wetsuit minimum. Unstad Arctic Surf provides wetsuits, boards, and instruction for beginners, and the surf conditions suit intermediate riders on the outer breaks. The valley behind the beach blocks the worst wind.

🏔️Lofoten IslandsMid-Range

Kayaking into Trollfjord

Lofoten, Norway

Trollfjord is 2 km long and 100 meters wide at its narrowest point, with vertical rock walls rising 1,000 meters on both sides. Lofoten Aktiv runs guided kayak entries from the Raftsund channel, paddling south into the fjord at the pace of the tidal flow. The walls close around you within 200 meters of the entrance. Sea eagles nest on the upper cliffs and are visible overhead from April onward.

🏔️Lofoten IslandsBudget

Cultural Tour of Nusfjord Fishing Village

Lofoten, Norway

Nusfjord is one of Norway's best-preserved 19th-century fishing villages, with 30 red-painted rorbu cabins still standing on the original cod-processing waterfront. The guided tour covers the village history from the Lofotfiske boom years of the 1880s through to today, including the fish rack system, the company store, and the boathouse that still holds working vessels. The tour takes 90 minutes on foot and requires no prior booking for groups under 6.

🏔️Lofoten IslandsMid-Range

Fjord Cruise to Trollfjord via Raftsund

Lofoten, Norway

The cruise from Svolvær runs north through the Raftsund strait before turning into Trollfjord, the 2 km side fjord with 1,000-meter vertical walls. Hurtigruten operates this as a dedicated excursion separate from the coastal route. The vessel is small enough to enter the fjord mouth, which is 100 meters wide. The turnaround at the fjord head requires reversing out, which takes 20 minutes in the confined space.

🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Whale Watching and Sea Eagle Safari in Vestfjorden

Bodø, Norway

Stella Polaris runs whale watching departures from Bodø into Vestfjorden, the 80 km wide body of water that separates Lofoten from the mainland. Sperm whales feed in the deep Vestfjord trench year-round. Sea eagles, with wingspans reaching 2.4 meters, hunt the surface fish and are reliably spotted on every departure. The trip covers 40–60 km of open fjord water and takes 6 hours total.

🌌Northern NorwayMid-Range

Kayaking Saltstraumen Maelstrom

Bodø, Norway

Saltstraumen is a 3 km tidal channel between Saltfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden that forces 400 million cubic meters of water through a 150-meter gap four times daily, generating the world's strongest tidal current at up to 20 knots. Stella Polaris schedules kayak sessions at slack tide, the 20–40 minute window when the current drops to near zero. You paddle across a whirlpool field that was spinning hard 30 minutes before you arrived.

Preikestolen: The Pulpit Rock Hike

Stavanger, Norway

Preikestolen is a 604-metre flat-topped cliff that drops vertically into Lysefjord. The hike is 8 km return with 334 metres of elevation gain — rated DNT Blue. Allow 4–5 hours in good conditions, longer in rain or ice. The trailhead is at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, reached by ferry from Stavanger harbour (45 min) and then bus. The cliff edge has no guardrail. In July and August, the path is crowded from 09:00 onward — start before 08:00 or plan for a late afternoon start. GetYourGuide and Viator both list guided group transfers from Stavanger if you prefer a joined tour with transport included.

Lysefjord RIB Safari from Stavanger

Stavanger, Norway

A RIB speedboat covers the 42 km length of Lysefjord in under 3 hours, passing under Preikestolen (604 m) and Kjerag (1,084 m) from the water. The cliff faces are sheer — looking straight up at the rock walls from sea level is a different experience than standing on top. Rødne Fjord Cruise operates departures from Skagenkaien, Stavanger. Season runs April to October. Bring a windproof jacket regardless of the weather — at 50 km/h across open water, the wind cuts through cotton.

Trolltunga: Guided Hike from Odda

Odda, Norway

Trolltunga — the Troll's Tongue — is a horizontal rock shelf jutting 700 metres above Lake Ringedalsvatnet in the Hardanger region. The hike is 22 km return with 800 metres of elevation gain. It is a DNT Red trail: exposed ridge sections, river crossings, and route-finding above the treeline. Allow 10–12 hours minimum. Snow can persist on the high sections into June — check conditions before leaving Odda. The trailhead is at Skjeggedal car park, reached via Odda, roughly 2 hours from Bergen by car or bus. Guided groups depart daily from May to October. Solo hikers attempting this in poor visibility or late in the day get evacuated at serious cost — bring a GPS, pack extra layers, and turn back if clouds close in on the plateau.

Folgefonna Glacier Hike from Rosendal

Rosendal, Norway

Folgefonna is the third-largest glacier in Norway — a 168 km² ice cap sitting above the inner Hardangerfjord. The guided hike from the Folgefonnsenteret starts at 1,150 metres and crosses active glacier terrain: crevasses, blue ice formations, and meltwater streams. Crampons and an ice axe are provided. No prior glacier experience required, but reasonable fitness is essential. The season runs June to September — outside those months the glacier approach roads are closed. Rosendal, the basecamp for this hike, is reached by ferry from Stavanger or by driving the E134 from Bergen (2 hours). Do not attempt the glacier without a certified guide.

Norway in a Nutshell: Flåm Railway and Sognefjord

Bergen, Norway

The Norway in a Nutshell route compresses the most dramatic fjord and mountain scenery in western Norway into a single day. From Bergen: train to Myrdal (2 hours), Flåm Railway descent 863 metres to sea level (1 hour — 20 tunnels, 5.4% gradient), ferry across Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord (2 hours, UNESCO-listed), bus over Stalheimskleiva hairpin road back to Voss, train to Bergen. The full circuit runs 8–9 hours. Fjord Tours sells all-inclusive tickets from Bergen. What the brochures don't say: Nærøyfjord in July carries 1,200 cruise passengers per day in addition to the tour groups. The route is still spectacular — just not solitary. Go in May or September.

Hardangerfjord Cruise with Fruit Farm Stop

Bergen, Norway

Hardangerfjord is 179 km long and lined with apple and cherry orchards — the same fjord where glacier meltwater from Folgefonna meets sea level. The Hardanger Sunnhordlandske Dampskipsselskap (HSD) runs a year-round ferry route from Bergen stopping at Norheimsund, Øystese, and Utne. In spring (April–May), the orchards are in blossom. In autumn (September–October), the cider harvest is in. Book a night at Utne Hotel — the oldest hotel in Norway, operating since 1722 — and build the fjord experience around a stay rather than a rushed day trip.

Nidaros Cathedral: Guided History and Crown Jewels Tour

Trondheim, Norway

Nidaros Cathedral is the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and the only one in Scandinavia still used for coronations. Construction started in 1070 over the grave of Saint Olav — the Viking king who Christianised Norway and was killed at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. The Gothic nave took 300 years to build. The guided tour (90 minutes) covers the architectural history, the crypt, and access to the Archbishop's Palace next door. The Crown Regalia — including the Norwegian crown, orb, and sceptre — are displayed in the adjoining palace. Trondheim Turistforening (TTT) also offers evening tours with access to the roof and bell towers.

Dovre Mountain Musk Ox Safari

Dovrefjell, Norway

The musk ox (moskus) is a relic from the last ice age — 350 kg, with horns that survived 40,000 years of Arctic winters. A herd of 300–350 lives in the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, the only place in mainland Europe where musk oxen roam free. The guided safari operates from Kongsvoll, 1.5 hours south of Trondheim by train (Dovre line). Groups of 6–10 hike at the pace the herd sets — some days 2 km, other days 15 km. The animals are wild and react to perceived threats: keep 200 metres distance and follow guide instructions exactly. Season runs June to September. Moskussafarier AS runs the licensed tours.

Sea Kayaking the Nidelva and Trondheimfjord

Trondheim, Norway

The Nidelva flows through the centre of Trondheim and opens into Trondheimfjord — 130 km of sheltered water stretching northwest to the sea. Guided kayak trips depart from the Nedre Elvehavn wharf in Trondheim and cover the river reach past the Bakklandet wooden houses before turning north into the fjord. Half-day tours run 3 hours; full-day trips reach the outer islands. Trondheim Kajakklubb runs beginner and guided sessions. The fjord is sheltered enough for beginners except in southwesterly gales — check the met.no forecast before heading into the open water section.

Kayaking the Oslofjord Islands

Oslo, Norway

The inner Oslofjord contains 40 islands accessible by city ferry or kayak from Aker Brygge. The closest — Hovedøya, Nakholmen, and Gressholmen — are 15 minutes paddling from the city centre. Longer routes reach the outer islands: Langøyene (the only fjord island with an official camping area) and Bleikøya. Oslo Kajakk runs guided day tours and multi-day island expeditions. The route between the inner islands is beginner-friendly; the outer fjord sections require sea kayak skills. Boat traffic increases sharply in summer — stay inside ferry lanes and keep clear of the high-speed Drøbak ferries.
