Stavanger

Stavanger is the base for Preikestolen — the 604-meter cliff that drops straight into Lysefjord. The city runs on oil money and street art. Nuart Festival has turned the centre into an open-air gallery. Gamle Stavanger has 173 white wooden houses, the best-preserved wooden settlement in Northern Europe.

Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)

604-meter vertical drop into Lysefjord, no railings

Preikestolen — Pulpit Rock — is a flat-topped cliff formation overhanging Lysefjord. The plateau is approximately 25 by 25 meters, cracked from the mountain face by frost erosion during the last ice age. Geologists estimate it separated from the cliff wall around 10,000 years ago.

Nuart Street Art Festival

Over 100 murals turning Stavanger into an open-air gallery since 2001

Nuart started in 2001 as a small street art project in Stavanger. It has grown into one of Europe’s most respected street art festivals, inviting internationally recognised artists — Banksy-adjacent names like ROA, Phlegm, Ernest Zacharevic, and Martin Whatson — to create large-scale works across the city.

Gamle Stavanger

173 white wooden houses from the 1700s, still lived in

Gamle Stavanger occupies the hillside west of Vågen harbour. The 173 wooden houses were built between the late 1700s and early 1800s, during the height of Stavanger’s herring and sardine industry. The workers who processed the fish in the canning factories lived in these houses.

Norwegian Petroleum Museum

From fishing nation to oil power in a single generation

In 1959, a Dutch gas discovery at Groningen triggered a search for hydrocarbons under the North Sea. Norway divided the continental shelf into blocks and offered them to international oil companies. On Christmas Eve 1969, Phillips Petroleum struck oil at Ekofisk. Norway changed overnight.
