About Naeroyfjord

Naeroyfjord narrows to 250 meters between walls that rise 1,000 meters on both sides. It is the narrowest fjord in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. The name translates to "narrow fjord" and the first time you see it from the water, you understand why.

The all-electric catamaran Future of The Fjords runs daily between Gudvangen and Flam through the Naeroyfjord. This is the fjord that appears on the Norway in a Nutshell route, combining Flam Railway, ferry, and bus in a single loop from Bergen.

Unlike Geirangerfjord, Naeroyfjord is accessible year-round. The electric ferries run in all seasons, though winter departures are less frequent. The fjord is narrower, quieter, and more intimate than its UNESCO counterpart in the north.

What to do at Nærøyfjord

Nærøyfjord is 18 km of UNESCO fjord narrowing to 250 meters, with walls that rise 1,700 meters above the waterline. The electric ferry is the main event. The Flåm Railway is the best way to arrive. Everything else is built around those two facts.

Electric ferry through Nærøyfjord

2 hours of pure fjord from Flåm to Gudvangen or reverse. The Future of The Fjords catamaran runs silently through 250-meter-wide walls rising 1,700 meters on both sides. Waterfalls appear and disappear as the fjord narrows. This is not a transit crossing — it is the main event.

Flåm Railway: 866 meters in one hour

The Flåm Railway drops from Myrdal at 866 meters to Flåm at sea level in 20 km and 20 tunnels. The train slows at Kjosfossen waterfall (225 m drop) and passengers step onto the platform to watch. One of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world still in operation.

Kayaking beneath 1,700-meter walls

Guided kayak tours from Gudvangen paddle into Nærøyfjord at water level. The walls block the sun for most of the day. In a kayak at 250 meters wide, the fjord feels narrower than it looks on a map. Half-day and full-day expeditions available. Drysuits provided.

How to reach Naeroyfjord

Four approaches. The train route through the Flam Railway is the most spectacular arrival. The car routes give you flexibility for the surrounding area. Times below are real driving and travel times — not what Google Maps says.

From Bergen to Naeroyfjord

Bergen Railway → Myrdal → Flam Railway → Flam → Naeroyfjord ferry → Gudvangen

The classic approach and the backbone of the Norway in a Nutshell route. No car required. Bergen Railway to Myrdal (2h15min), Flam Railway to Flam (1 hour, 866m descent), then the Naeroyfjord electric ferry to Gudvangen (2 hours). The Kjosfossen waterfall stop on the Flam Railway is included in every departure.

Public transport

Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen)

Bergen to Myrdal: 2h15min. The train runs along the full Bergen Railway line. Myrdal is the junction for the Flam Railway — do not miss the connection.

Book Bergen Railway tickets at vy.no. Flam Railway tickets separately at flamsbana.no.

Flam Railway (Flamsbana)

Myrdal to Flam: 1 hour, 20 km, 866m descent. The train stops at Kjosfossen waterfall (225m drop) for a 5-minute photo stop. Every departure does this.

Rental car

This is a car-free route. If travelling with a car, use the Bergen by car route (E16 via Laerdal Tunnel) instead.

Stops along the way

Kjosfossen waterfall

225-meter drop visible from the Flam Railway platform stop. The train pauses here on every departure. Pack a rain jacket — the mist carries far.

Flam village

The ferry departs from Flam harbour. Allow 30 minutes between the Flam Railway arrival and the first available ferry departure.

Naeroyfjord narrows

250 meters wide at the narrowest point, 1,000-meter walls on both sides. The ferry slows through here. Come onto the deck regardless of weather.

Before you go

The Naeroyfjord ferry sells out on peak summer days. Book your ferry slot before you book the Flam Railway.

Return timing from Gudvangen: buses run to Voss (35 min) with connections to Bergen. Confirm the last bus of the day before you board.

Express boat from Bergen (Norled)

Norled operates express boats from Bergen Strandkaiterminalen to Flam (5.5 hours) and Gudvangen (not direct — connect via Flam). The express boat runs through Sognefjord and is a scenic alternative for travellers without a car. Check Norled.no for current timetables and seasonal availability.

Where to base yourself at Naeroyfjord

Three towns on the same fjord system, each with a different energy. Flam is the transit hub. Gudvangen is the quiet western entry. Aurland is the underrated middle option for travellers who want fjord access without the Flam crowds.

Flam

350 residents, 1.4 million visitors per year

Flam sits at the bottom of the Flam Railway and the Naeroyfjord ferry departure point. It is the busiest tourist access point in the Sognefjord system, with 1.4 million visitors passing through annually. The village fills completely between 10:00 and 16:00 in July when cruise ships tender passengers ashore. After 17:00, the place empties and the fjord is yours.

Best for

  • Accessing the Flam Railway and Naeroyfjord ferry
  • Norway in a Nutshell travellers
  • Short stays (1–2 nights)
  • Travellers who want services within walking distance

Not ideal for

  • Budget travellers (tourist-priced across the board)
  • Anyone who dislikes crowds between 10:00 and 16:00
  • Quiet escapes — Flam is a transit hub, not a retreat

Accommodation

4-star historic hotel

1,500–3,500 NOK/night

The original 1866 wooden hotel building is still standing. 87 rooms. Restaurant and bar on-site. Located at the fjord edge, 200m from the Flam Railway station. The historic wing has smaller rooms with original fittings — worth asking for specifically.

Flam Marina & Apartments

Apartment / self-catering

1,200–2,500 NOK/night

Modern apartments directly on the harbour. Some units have fjord-facing terraces. Kitchen included — useful for multi-night stays when you want to avoid tourist-priced restaurants every evening.

Flam Camping

Camping + cabins

Dining

Ægir Brewery Restaurant

Viking longhouse exterior in the village. House-brewed beers. Pork ribs and smoked salmon are the reliable mains. Outdoor terrace facing the Flam Railway platform. Book ahead for dinner in July.

Flamsbrygga

Harbour-side restaurant. Fish soup and grilled fish from Sognefjord. Better for lunch than dinner — the menu is simpler and prices slightly lower than Ægir.

Fretheim Hotel Restaurant

Traditional Norwegian dining in the historic hotel. Local lamb and cured fish. Book 24 hours ahead for dinner — hotel guests compete with walk-ins for limited covers.

Local tip

The Naeroyfjord ferry first departure is often 08:30 or 09:00 in summer. Take it. The fjord is empty, the light is different, and Gudvangen before 11:00 is a different place than at 14:00.

Booking lead times

Peak July: Book Fretheim Hotel 2–4 months ahead. Flam Marina apartments fill quickly. Camping has more last-minute availability. September: 2–4 weeks is usually sufficient. Expect 25–35% lower rates than July. Mid-range hotel reality: 1,500–3,000 NOK/night in July, 1,000–2,000 NOK/night in September.

When to visit

Summer (June to August)

June to August: the busiest period. Cruise ships dock at Flam daily. The Naeroyfjord ferry sells out on peak days. Book ahead. For quiet mornings, catch the first departure.

Winter (November to March)

Electric ferries still run but on a reduced schedule. The fjord is quiet, often misty, with snow to the waterline. The Flam Railway runs year-round. A completely different experience from summer.
