I have run this route more times than I can count, most recently in June 2026 to check the current connection windows. Here is what it involves.

The route, segment by segment

Segment 1: Bergen to Myrdal (Bergensbanen, operated by Vy). Departure from Bergen station. Duration approximately 2 hours. The train climbs to 1,237 metres at Finse, the highest station on the Norwegian rail network and the plateau used for the Hoth exterior shots in The Empire Strikes Back. Myrdal station at 867 metres is the junction with the Flåm Railway.

Segment 2: Myrdal to Flåm (Flåmsbana). The Flåmsbana departs Myrdal within approximately 15 minutes of the Bergensbanen arrival. Duration 55 minutes descending. 20 km of track, 20 tunnels, maximum gradient 5.5%. The Kjosfossen waterfall stop at kilometre 17 is a scheduled 5 minutes on the platform. For the best view on the descent, sit on the right side facing forward.

Segment 3: Flåm to Gudvangen (Nærøyfjord cruise, operated by The Fjords DA). Ferry departs Flåm approximately 30 minutes after the Flåmsbana arrival. Duration 2 hours. This is the central segment of the package. The Fjords DA operates the route with the all-electric Future of the Fjords and its sister ship. 18 km of UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord narrowing to 250 metres at Beitelen. The open top deck is the correct place for this leg. Bring a windproof shell.

Segment 4: Gudvangen to Voss (coach over Stalheimskleiva). The coach departs Gudvangen shortly after the ferry docks. Duration approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The route includes Stalheimskleiva, a 1.5 km road with 13 hairpin bends on an 18% gradient. The coach uses this section only in the downhill direction from Stalheim toward Gudvangen as a one-way road, so northbound coaches return via the tunnel. Stalheim Hotel at the top is a listed historic building.

Segment 5: Voss to Bergen (Bergensbanen return, operated by Vy). Duration approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Multiple departures per hour. Arrival in Bergen typically between 18:00 and 20:00 depending on which outbound departure you booked.

What works

• The connections. Fjord Tours times the four segments within the package so each one waits for the previous one. If a train is late, the ferry holds. If you book segments independently and miss a connection, the next operator is not obligated to wait. For most travellers, the package is worth the small premium over separate bookings for this reason alone.
• The ferry direction. Flåm to Gudvangen is the correct direction. The ferry enters Nærøyfjord from the Aurlandsfjord junction and you face the narrowing. The reverse sequence works visually but is less dramatic.

• Treating the Stalheimskleiva coach as transport only. The 13 hairpin bends are the point. Sit on the side that faces outward on the descent and look out the window.
• Expecting to arrive fresh. 10 to 12 hours of trains, ferries, and coaches with viewpoint stops is a full day. Plan a light dinner in Bergen and an unscheduled morning after.
• Doing Nutshell on the same day as Bryggen. Some itineraries stack them. They do not fit in the same calendar day. Give each its own slot.
