Ravnkloa Fish Market

Daily catch from the fjord, sold at the harbour mouth

Location: Nidelva harbour mouthType: Working fish marketSpeciality: Fjord shrimp, king crabMunkholmen ferry: Departs from here

Overview

Ravnkloa is where the Nidelva river meets the Trondheimsfjord. The fish market here is small — three or four stalls on a good day — but genuine. The fish comes from the fjord boats moored at the quay, not from a distribution warehouse.

The market sells fresh-caught shrimp (buy a bag and peel them on the harbour wall), smoked fjord trout, cured salmon, and seasonal catches. King crab from Finnmark appears in winter. In summer, the shrimp season runs June through August and the quality peaks in July.

Havfruen (The Mermaid) restaurant sits at the edge of Ravnkloa, facing Munkholmen island across the harbour. The shellfish platter is the order — local langoustines, mussels, shrimp, and crab. Book a window table for the harbour view.

The Munkholmen ferry departs from the Ravnkloa quay. Munkholmen is a small island 2 km offshore that has served as a monastery (1100s), a fortress (1600s), a prison (1700s), and is now a public beach and swimming spot in summer. The ferry takes 10 minutes.

🏝️

Munkholmen Island

Monastery, fortress, prison, beach. The ferry departs from Ravnkloa every 30 min in summer. 10-minute ride. Free entry to the island. Swimming and sunbathing from the south shore.

🍽️

Havfruen Restaurant
