Trondheim

Trondheim has 190,000 residents, Scandinavia’s only medieval coronation cathedral, and a food scene that rivals Oslo at half the price. Bakklandet runs along the Nidelva with wooden houses from the 1700s. The city has more breweries per capita than any other Norwegian city.

Trondheim

Nidarosdomen

Scandinavia’s only medieval coronation cathedral, founded 1070

King Olav Haraldsson fell at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. Within a year, miracles were reported at his burial site in Trondheim. The church built over his grave became a pilgrimage destination. By 1070, construction began on a stone cathedral that would take 230 years to complete.

Bakklandet

Wooden houses, cobblestones, and the Old Town Bridge since 1681

Bakklandet was a working-class neighbourhood from the 1600s to the 1900s. Dockworkers, craftsmen, and small traders lived in the narrow wooden houses along the Nidelva river. By the 1960s, the city planned to demolish it for a motorway. Residents fought back. The neighbourhood survived.

Ravnkloa Fish Market

Daily catch from the fjord, sold at the harbour mouth

Ravnkloa is where the Nidelva river meets the Trondheimsfjord. The fish market here is small — three or four stalls on a good day — but genuine. The fish comes from the fjord boats moored at the quay, not from a distribution warehouse.

Cycling in Trondheim

The world’s first bicycle lift and 200 km of cycling paths

Trondheim is Norway’s cycling city by design, not by accident. The city invested in bicycle infrastructure decades before it became fashionable. The Trampe bicycle lift — a metal plate that pushes your right foot while you sit on the saddle — was installed in 1993 at Brubakken, the steep hill between Bakklandet and Kristiansten Fortress.
