Fish Market at Torget

Trading since the 1200s, still selling the morning catch

Location: Torget, central BergenTrading since: 1200sOutdoor stalls: May–SepIndoor hall: Year-round

Overview

Torget — Bergen’s main square at the head of Vågen harbour — has hosted a fish market for over 800 years. The tradition predates the Hanseatic period. When German merchants arrived in the 14th century, the market was already old.

The outdoor stalls run from May to September. Fishmongers sell the morning’s catch: fresh shrimp by the bag, whole salmon, king crab legs split and grilled to order, smoked mackerel, and fish cakes. The prices are tourist-adjusted in summer but the product is genuine — these are working fishmongers, not actors.

The indoor fish hall (Mathallen Bergen, opened 2012) operates year-round with permanent vendors. Fresh fish counters, a sushi bar, seafood restaurants, and a deli selling cured and smoked fish to take away. Less atmospheric than the outdoor stalls but more practical in Bergen’s rain.

The key to the Fish Market: arrive before the cruise ships dock. The first ships typically unload passengers at 09:00. By 10:00, the market is standing room only. At 07:00, it is local fishmongers setting up their stalls. That is the market worth visiting.

Highlights

🦐

King Crab

Norwegian king crab legs, grilled and split on the spot. The crabs come from Finnmark, 2,000 km north. A full serving runs 250–400 NOK depending on the size and the stall.

🦞

Fresh Shrimp

Buy a bag of fresh-boiled shrimp (150–200 NOK) and peel them on the harbour wall. Bread and lemon from the neighbouring stall. This is Bergen’s cheapest quality lunch.

🏠

Indoor Fish Hall

Year-round indoor market with permanent vendors. Fish counters, sushi, seafood restaurants, and a deli for vacuum-packed smoked salmon to take home.

Timing

Before 09:00: local fishmongers, few tourists. 09:00–15:00: cruise passengers, higher prices, crowds. After 16:00: stalls closing but deals on remaining stock.
