Bergen gets 260 days of rain per year. This is not a warning — it is the character of the city. The wooden Bryggen warehouses date to the Hanseatic period. Fløibanen takes you to 320 meters. The fish market at Torget opens at 07:00. Come before the cruise ships dock.
4 guides with practical info, honest assessments, and no filler.
Bergen
Hanseatic trading warehouses from the 14th century, rebuilt after every fire
Bergen was one of the Hanseatic League’s four major trading offices from the 14th century. German merchants controlled the stockfish trade — dried cod from Northern Norway exchanged for grain, cloth, and salt from the continent. Bryggen was their base of operations.
Bergen
320 meters above Bergen in 6 minutes
The Fløibanen funicular has been running since 1918. The current carriages were replaced in 2002 and carry 80 passengers per trip. The lower station sits two blocks east of Bryggen, in the centre of Bergen.
Bergen
Trading since the 1200s, still selling the morning catch
Torget — Bergen’s main square at the head of Vågen harbour — has hosted a fish market for over 800 years. The tradition predates the Hanseatic period. When German merchants arrived in the 14th century, the market was already old.
Bergen
Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord start here
Bergen sits at the intersection of two fjord systems. Hardangerfjord stretches 179 km south-east, reaching Eidfjord and the Hardangervidda plateau. Sognefjord extends 204 km north-east — the longest fjord in Norway and the deepest at 1,308 meters.
