Hardanger cider trail: the May Siderfest, the October Fruktsleppet, and the farmgates between
40% of Norway's commercial fruit grows along these shores. The annual cider calendar runs May to October. Here is the verified producer list and the real festival dates.
Hardanger International Cider Festival (Siderfest) runs 7 to 9 May 2026 in Odda. Ulvik Fruktsleppet falls on the first weekend of October. Between them, farmgate producers across Sørfjorden, Lofthus, Ulvik, and Aga open their tasting rooms. This is the current route.

Most travel writing about Hardanger stops at the orchard blossom in May. The blossom is brief, weather-dependent, and often past its peak when international visitors arrive. What older guides miss is that Hardanger has a full cider calendar running from May through October, with two anchor events and roughly 15 producers opening their farmgates between them. This is the working version of the cider trail, not the postcard version.
In 2013 Norway changed the alcohol law to allow small cider producers to sell directly from their farms. That single rule is the reason the farmgate culture in Hardanger exists in the form it does now. Before 2013 you bought Hardanger cider at the Vinmonopolet in Odda. Now you buy it from the person who pressed it.

The geography of the orchards
Hardanger's commercial fruit growing is concentrated in three areas.
- Sørfjorden (south shore). Aga, Lofthus, Ullensvang. Rv550 connects the villages along the fjord shore. This is the most densely planted stretch and holds the highest concentration of cider farms.
- Ulvikfjorden. Ulvik on the northern arm. Three producers on the official Frukt- og Siderruta (Fruit and Cider Route).
- Odda and inner Sørfjord. Home of the annual Hardanger International Cider Festival and a handful of newer producers in the old smelterworks district.
Drive time from Bergen to Lofthus: 2 hours 30 minutes via E16 and the Hardanger Bridge. The bridge toll is approximately 175 NOK by AutoPASS. Without AutoPASS you pay the standard rate plus a surcharge. Register before you drive.
The two anchor events
Hardanger Internasjonale Siderfest (Odda, May)
The Hardanger International Cider Festival runs 7 to 9 May 2026 in Odda. Tickets opened 15 March 2026 at siderfest.no. The festival brings together cider producers within a 20-kilometer radius of Odda, plus roughly 12 additional producers from within 70 kilometers, and invited international cidermakers. Events run at cider farms around the Odda area and at Lindehuset in the preserved Smelteverket industrial buildings.
If you want a concentrated introduction to Norwegian cider from the people making it, this is the weekend. Book accommodation in Odda well ahead. The town fills.
Ulvik Fruktsleppet (October)
Fruktsleppet, the annual fruit launch on the Frukt- og Siderruta in Ulvik, falls on the first weekend of October. This is when the season's new ciders and apple juices are officially released. The three Ulvik producers (Hardanger Saft- og Siderfabrikk, Syse gard, Ulvik Frukt & Cideri) open their tasting rooms and farm shops together. A smaller Minisidersleppet runs the Saturday following the main launch for those who missed the opening weekend.
The May cider launch (Sidersleppet) on the same route marks the seasonal opening. October is the harvest version and the more substantial of the two events.

What to order
Hardanger ciders are usually still or lightly sparkling. Producers work primarily with Gravenstein, Aroma, and Discovery apples adapted to the Sørfjord microclimate. The regulated Norwegian cider category means the alcohol comes only from the apples, with no added sugar or water. This gives Hardanger cider a drier, more structured character than most British or French commercial ciders.
Sparkling brut styles are the most consistent. Still ciders with primary fermentation from wild yeasts are the more specific expressions. Do not skip the apple juices. Single-variety pressed juice from Gravenstein or Discovery apples bears almost no resemblance to the supermarket version. Buy at least one bottle at the farmgate.
Driving the route
Rv550 runs the south shore of Sørfjorden through Aga, Lofthus, and Ullensvang. The road narrows in sections with designated passing places. In summer expect slow campervan traffic. Budget extra time.
From Ullensvang or Lofthus, the Utne ferry crosses Sørfjorden to Kvanndal on the north shore. From Kvanndal, Rv7 runs east to Eidfjord and then on to Ulvik via the Hardanger Bridge or the Granvin route. A day that covers Sørfjorden in the morning and Ulvik in the afternoon is feasible if you start early.
If you are tasting, designate a driver. Norwegian drink-drive law is 0.2 g/l blood alcohol. Two small cider samples are sufficient to put you over. Tasting rooms do not serve spit cups by default. Ask for one.

The Hardanger cider trail is the working version of the fjord. The blossom photographs are what tourism boards sell. The harvest, the press, and the tasting room conversation with the person who planted the trees is what the region actually runs on. Build a trip around May or October and you see the part the May-blossom day-trippers miss.
