Nordmarka Forest
From city centre to wilderness in 25 minutes by metro
Overview
Nordmarka is Oslo’s backyard forest — 1,700 km² of spruce, pine, and birch stretching north from the city boundary. The T-bane metro delivers you to the trailhead at Frognerseteren in 25 minutes from the National Theatre station. Same ticket, same zone.
The trail network is maintained by DNT Oslo and marked with blue and red blazes on trees. In summer, the forest fills with hikers, runners, and families heading to the swimming lakes. Sognsvann is the closest lake — a 3.3 km loop around the shoreline, flat and accessible. Deeper in, the trails thin out and the solitude is real.
In winter, the same trails become cross-country ski tracks. Oslo has 2,600 km of prepared ski trails in the Marka forests — many of them floodlit until 22:00. Norwegians commute to ski after work. The rental shop at Voksenlia has everything you need.
Ullevålseter is the classic hiking destination: a DNT cabin 8 km from Frognerseteren, serving waffles with brown cheese and sour cream. The hike takes 2 hours each way on well-marked paths. In winter, ski there in 90 minutes.
